What is Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder that affects the lungs, pancreas, and other organs in the body. In people suffering from Cystic Fibrosis, the body produces abnormal glycoproteins which interfere with salt metabolism. It is caused by mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene, which leads to the production of thick, sticky mucus that can clog the airways and lead to lung infections, as well as blockages in the pancreas, preventing enzymes from breaking down food properly.
